Week 5: Project 1 Presentation
Project 1 Presentation
This week, we’re presenting Project 1: Epistemological Research of Technology. We’ll share the final prototypes, observations, and claims, and look back at how each project changed through the four-week process.
Reflection
After the presentations, reflect on the following questions:
- What did you learn from making a working prototype that you could not learn from research alone?
- What made people read your system as intelligent, responsive, or alive?
- Did your main question change while you were making the project? How?
- What worked, and what didn’t work?
- What would you continue exploring if you had more time?

Readings
Watch Fei Fei Liu’s How we teach computers to understand images(2005), a foundational video in the field of computer vision.
Then, watch Kate Crawford’s The Trouble with Bias(2018). We will discuss it next week as we begin the next module.
Come ready to discuss:
- How does an image become data that a machine can learn from?
- What role do categories and labels play in training an AI system?
- What kinds of decisions have to be made when building a dataset?
- How might different ways of organizing the same images lead to different outcomes?
- What does these two videos help you notice about the relationship between people, data, and machine learning?
